Title of Talk: "Postgrowth: the new economics of living well within planetary limits" Growth in the economy and resource use are often presented as a prerequisite for well-being. At the same time, growth in the economy and resource use is also the main driver of the climate crisis and loss of biodiversity. Would it be possible to rethink our economies to achieve well-being for all within planetary limits? This talk presents recent research in postgrowth possibilities Professor Julia Steinberger researches Ecological Economics at the University of Lausanne. After obtaining her PhD in experimental physics at MIT, Julia moved to the interdisciplinary areas of industrial ecology and ecological economics, first as a postdoc at the universities of Lausanne and Zurich, then in Vienna at the Institute of Social Ecology, and subsequently as a professor at the University of Leeds in the UK. Her research examines the connections between resource use (energy and materials, greenhouse gas emissions) and societal performance (economic activity and human wellbeing). |
