SAMCE 2021 | Fall Series
Series of online events in November 2021
With our events, we offered you an insight in what is going on in the Swiss scientific community in advanced manufacturing. In November 2021, we organized a small series of short online events. In the first half of 2022, we plan our first in-person event to meet and see your peers in 3D. On this page, you find information about our SAMCE 2021 | Fall Series.
Target group
Our events are especially made for early-career investigators, such as doctoral students and postdocs, as well as other academic staff active in advanced manufacturing in Switzerland. We also welcome senior master students who want to present the research activities and projects in advanced manufacturing that are related to their master theses. We are looking for active participants who strive for scientific exchange and who are prepared to share and discuss ideas, to support and to work with colleagues across disciplines and institutions. Hence, we are looking for participants who become an active part of the events and of the scientific community in advanced manufacturing in Switzerland. Topics
In May and June 2021, we asked the Swiss scientific community in advanced manufacturing in an online survey about hot topics that they would like to discuss and learn more about. Based on the results of this online survey, we selected one manufacturing technology and two cross-technology topics as the focus areas of our Fall Series. Coating and Printing (4 Nov 2021)
Coating and printing are manufacturing technologies that are used to equip the surface of products with structures or functionalities that are different to the bulk material. The range of coating and printing technologies is broad and they are used in all industry sectors and include products and applications. Due to the large range of technologies and applications, there is sometimes little exchange between researchers from the different fields. However, we believe that there is a lot of common ground in this domain. An exchange between scientists across the various coating and printing technologies and across the different applications could therefore lead to fresh ideas how to tackle key challenges and hence in turn to technological breakthroughs. Therefore, we selected "Coating and Printing" as one of the topics for the Fall Series. You will find more information about the scope and the program of the event which took place on 4 November 2021 on this page. Robots, Automation and Learning Systems (11 Nov 2021)
Everyone is talking about artificial intelligence, digitalization and industry 4.0. Thanks to robots and learning systems, the level of automation is constantly increasing in many industry sectors. Researchers often use new methods and approaches that are developed for other applications to produce even more powerful automation solutions for our industry. We believe that it is decisive in this topic to bring together people across disciplines and to connect data scientists with researchers from different domains in advanced manufacturing. Therefore, to strenghten the community also in this domain, we dedicate our second event in the Fall Series to "Robots, Automation and Learning Systems". You will find more information about the scope and the program of the event which took place on 11 November 2021 on this page. Modeling and Simulation (16 Nov 2021)
The computing power of today's computers is umpteen times higher than in the past. These advances are paving the way for powerful new tools for computer-aided modeling and simulation of materials and manufacturing processes. This accelerates the research in our community. With these new tools and the data they generate, we can predict new materials and their properties as well as better understand what is happening in manufacturing processes. Furthermore, modeling and simulation help to plan and design experiments. Also in this topic, only the fusion of the expertise of data scientists and domain experts will create the necessary joint competences to fully use the possibilities of higher computing power and the new digital modeling and simulation tools. We chose "Modeling and Simulation" as the third topic of our Fall Series to show young scientists - in particular the experimentalists - what is already possible with simulation and modeling today, but also to understand where problems and challenges currently still lie.
