Coating and Printing

SAMCE 2021 | Fall Series - Online event on 4 November 2021, 15:00 - 16:15

Picture
Coating and printing are manufacturing technologies that are used to equip the surface of products with structures or functionalities that are different to the bulk material. More about the range of this topic can be read here.

At the beginning of the event, the participants were asked what excites them most about the topic of 'Coating and Printing'. In an online poll, the attendees could submit their answers. The 'Word Cloud' below shows that the variety of applications and functionality seem to be among the most exciting topics in this field of research.

Program
With our Fall Series we aim to bring together and inspire our community in advanced manufacturing in short online events. We have a dense and diversified program with different modules which are described in more detail on this page. The program of this event is shown below. The respective presentations are available as PDF downloads.

Topic
Coating and printing are manufacturing technologies that are used to equip the surface of products with structures or functionalities that are different to the bulk material. The range of coating and printing technologies includes:
  • Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) methods, e.g. sputtering or evaporation methods
  • Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) methods, including PECVD, ALD and VTD
  • Liquid coating methods, e.g. dip, blade, spray, roll transfer, slot die or curtain coating
  • Chemical and electrochemical coating methods, e.g. conversion coating or plating
  • Analog printing methods, e.g. gravure, flexographic or screen printing
  • Digital printing methods, e.g. inkjet, aerosol-jet or electro-hydrodynamic printing

Coating and printing technologies are used in all industry sectors and include products and applications such as:
  • Optoelectronic components, e.g. solar cells, LEDs, sensors or detectors
  • Electronic components, e.g. battery cell components, touch screens or transistors
  • Optical components, e.g. lenses, mirrors or waveguides
  • Construction components, e.g. windows or corrosion protected metal parts
  • Other functional coatings, e.g. for medical implants, tools or highly stressed parts

Due to the large range of technologies and applications, there is sometimes little exchange between researchers from the different fields. However, we believe that there is a lot of common ground in this domain. An exchange between scientists across the various coating and printing technologies and across the different applications could therefore lead to fresh ideas how to tackle key challenges and hence in turn to technological breakthroughs. Therefore, we selected "Coating and Printing" as one of the topics for the Fall Series.
